The objective of this course is to give students an overview of major theories, debates, and empirical results in money and banking. We will focus on the following topics: money, interest rates, central banking, monetary policy, asset market, financial and payment system, financial crises, etc. Although these topics may be highly mathematical, we will quickly review the technical parts and emphasize the concepts and intuitions of them. Students are encouraged to ask and discuss the applications of these theories in the real world. In addition, we will read some research reports from central banks or investment banks. By the end of the course, students should have developed a point of view about news and events related to money and banking.
